For the fifth day in a row, India recorded a spike of over 9,000 in the number of new novel coronavirus infections reported from across the country. As of June 7, India has 2,46,628 confirmed cases, including 1,20,406 active cases, 1,19,293 recoveries, and 6,929 casualties as per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's Covid-19 bulletin on Sunday morning.

The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra, the Indian state with the most cases, crossed that of China on Sunday with a tally of 85,975. Maharashtra's Health Department reported 3,007 new cases on June 7.

Even as confirmed cases continue to rise rapidly, shopping malls and places of worship are gearing up to reopen from Monday while abiding by SOPs part of the Ministry of Home Affairs' "Unlock-1" notification. This is part of the Government of India's three-phased plan to gradually reverse the nationwide lockdown first enforced on March 25 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

86% of cases in Tamil Nadu asymptomatic

Second, only to Maharashtra in infections, Tamil Nadu on Sunday reported 1,515 new cases of Covid-19. The state's tally now stands at 31,667. This figure is inclusive of 14,396 active cases, 16,999 recoveries, and 269 casualties.

Chief Minister K Palaniswami said on Sunday that 86 percent of Tamil Nadu's Covid-19 cases have been found to be asymptomatic. Tamil Nadu has a lower mortality rate than any other Indian state and even some other countries, CM Palaniswami said, adding that the state's recovery rate was the best in the country.

Odisha extends closure of malls, places of worship

Odisha government has decided to extend the closure of shopping malls and places of worship till June 30. Maharashtra is also, yet to take a decision in this regard.


Priests in Mathura met with the district administration and said they are in favor of extending the closure of places of worship, including the 'Banke Bihari' temple in Vrindavan till April 30.

Several states such as Karnataka, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh have issued specific SOPs for places of worship and shopping malls. These include regular cleaning and mandatory social distancing. Some have even taken to the token system to ensure no crowding.

Elderly patient tied to the hospital bed

In a most appalling turn of events, an 80-year-old man was reportedly tied to a bed at a private hospital in Shajapur in Madhya Pradesh's Rajgarh district. The matter came to light when visuals of Lakshmi Narayan's hands and legs tied to a hospital bed went into wide circulation on social media platforms.

Collector of Shajapur, Dinesh Jain took cognizance of the incident and initiated a probe against the private hospital in question. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also promised strict action against what he termed a "cruel" act.

A somewhat similar case was reported from Delhi's state-run LNJP hospital where family members of a 65-year-old Covid-19 patient alleged that he disappeared from the facility. Efforts are still underway to trace Raj Narain Mahto.

Bengal allows kin to see bodies of Covid-19 victims

West Bengal government on Sunday permitted family members of Covid-19 patients to see the body of their loved ones and pay their respects. It also issued guidelines to ensure that safety precautions are not ignored in this process. The SOP stated clearly that only civic authorities will be allowed to perform the final rites in light of safety concerns.

The state Health Department reported 449 new cases of infection and 13 more casualties in its daily Covid-19 bulletin on June 7.

Migrant hangs self in Chhattisgarh

A 20-year-old migrant worker took his own life at a quarantine center in Chhattisgarh's Gariaband district on Sunday. Identified as Lobo Ram Sari, he was a native of Ghorapadar village and had recently returned to the state from Hyderabad. He was placed in 14-day mandatory quarantine as has been the state's policy for returning migrants.

Culture Ministry allows 820 monuments to reopen

In an order on Sunday, the Union Ministry of Culture issued an order allowing 820 centrally protected monuments under the care of the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) to reopen from June 8. The list did not include the Taj Mahal in Agra among others.

Minister Prahlad Patel clarified that the list includes only those monuments which also serve as places of worship.

Social distancing goes for a toss at Marine Drive

Residents of Mumbai, the city worst-hit by the pandemic, were seen on Marine Drive, the city's iconic boulevard on Sunday. While State Reserve Police Force (SPRF) personnel could be spotted urging locals to retain social distance, little heed was paid to their advisory.

Hospitals refuse admission

Taking a cue from the recommendations of a committee led by Dr. Mahesh Verma, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Sunday that all state-run and some private hospitals in the city will be reserved only for Delhi's residents. He clarified that hospitals that come under the purview of the Central government will continue to be open for everyone.

CM Kejriwal's announcement comes at a time when new reports of hospitals in the Delhi-NCR refusing admission to patients are coming to light each day. One such case was pointed out by former MP Shahid Siddiqui whose niece died after she was refused admission by a number of hospitals in the national capital. Another case was that of a pregnant woman whose family could not get her admitted to hospitals in Noida and Ghaziabad despite a 13-hour ordeal that resulted in her death.
